SANTA CRUZ >> The Santa Cruz Yacht Club will host the 25th annual Day on the Monterey Bay Regatta on Sunday at the Santa Cruz Lower Harbor.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County, said Tory Del Favero, the group’s outreach coordinator.

“This event has brought over $900,000 during the past 25 years and generates over 10 percent of Big Brothers Big Sister’s annual budget,” Del Favero said.

Bob DeWitt, coordinator of the event, said the Santa Cruz Yacht Club will not receive any of the money spent by participants at the event.

“I am gratified that the yacht club sponsors the regatta for such a worthy organization,” DeWitt said.

Since 1982, Big Brothers Big Sisters has served more than 6,000 children in Santa Cruz County, Del Favero said. The national organization of Big Brothers Big Sisters, founded in 1904 according to its website, is volunteer-supported youth mentoring organization.

“This year alone we are working with over 325 kids in our community through our After School Program and One-to-One Mentoring Program,” Del Favero said. “All proceeds from this event go to support outreach and recruitment, screening and training volunteers, group activities and ongoing support for matches and referral services for families.”

DeWitt said the event will begin at 1 p.m. with a yacht race in Santa Cruz’s Lower Harbor. Up to 40 boats are expected to take part in the race.

DeWitt said the Chardonnay II, a 70-foot luxury sailing yacht, has been donated for the event and will be available to take spectators to observe the race.

When the race concludes, DeWitt said there will be an awards dinner, raffle and silent auction running from 4-6 p.m.

Prizes at the raffle include a vacation in Hawaii or Las Vegas. Only 150 tickets will be sold for the vacation raffle with just two winners, Del Favero said.

“This all takes place outdoors in the yard below the Santa Cruz Yacht Club. The public is welcome to all activities,” DeWitt said.

Although the event will feature games and prizes, the focus remains funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County.

“The goal of this event is to generate funds and create awareness of the children we serve in Santa Cruz County,” Del Favero said.
